- On published 200-minute US plans (November 2026), live answering works out to about $1.38 to $3.60 per minute; small and pay-as-you-go plans cost more per minute.
- For 200 minutes a month, published plans range from about $277 (MAP Communications) to $720 (Ruby).
- Per-call human plans run about $8.50 to $11.50 a call; AI answering plans start around $49 to $150 a month.
- Free options exist (trials, a free AI tier, voicemail transcription), but a truly free live answering service doesn't.
An answering service cost in the US typically works out to about $1.38 to $3.60 per minute for live agents on mid-size plans, $8.50 to $11.50 per call on per-call plans, and roughly $49 to $300 a month for AI answering, based on providers’ published pricing as of November 2026. For a small business taking about 200 minutes of calls a month, that means anywhere from about $277 to $720 for a human service.
Below are the actual plan prices from nine providers, a cost table by call volume, the fees that inflate bills, and where to find cheap and free-trial options.
How answering services charge: four pricing models
Before comparing prices, know which model you’re looking at. A $49 plan and a $300 plan can end up costing the same once you add usage.
Per minute. The most common model for live services. You pay a monthly fee that includes a bundle of minutes, then a per-minute rate above that. Ask how minutes are counted: whether each call rounds up, and whether time spent on hold or transferring is billed.
Per call. You pay a set price for each call, whatever its length. Smith.ai’s human receptionist plans work this way. It suits businesses with long intake calls, and costs more for quick ones.
Pay as you go. A small monthly fee with no included minutes and a higher per-minute rate. Good for very low or unpredictable volume, expensive once you get busy.
Flat AI plans. AI answering services usually charge a monthly fee for a large bundle of minutes, calls or callers. The per-call cost is far lower, though you may pay a setup fee if someone builds the AI for you.
Answering service prices by provider (November 2026)
All prices are from the providers’ own pricing pages, in USD, before taxes, checked in November 2026. Vendors change plans often, so confirm before you buy.
Live answering services (per minute)
| Provider | Entry plan | 200 minutes | Overage per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAP Communications | $49/mo pay as you go | $179 for 125 min + overage | $1.28 to $1.37 |
| PATLive | $49/mo pay as you go | $349 | $1.49 to $2.99 |
| Posh | $65/mo, no minutes | $420 | $1.90 to $2.30 |
| Abby Connect | $164 for 50 min | $599 | Plan’s minute rate |
| Ruby | $250 for 50 min | $720 | Not published |
A few details that change the comparison:
- MAP Communications includes English and Spanish on every plan and its Premium plan is $649 for 500 minutes.
- PATLive includes 24/7 answering and bilingual service, and its 1,000-minute plan is $1,499.
- Posh includes bilingual receptionists and 24/7 coverage on every plan.
- Abby Connect has no weekend upcharge, and AI-handled minutes count as half a minute.
- Ruby says there are no setup or onboarding fees and includes 24/7 Spanish and bilingual answering.
Per-call human answering
Smith.ai charges per call for its live receptionists: $300 a month for 30 calls ($11.50 per extra call), $810 for 90 calls ($10.50 extra) and $2,100 for 300 calls ($8.50 extra). There’s no setup fee, 24/7 coverage is included, and a Spanish line is a $1 per-call add-on. Plans are month to month, with 10% off for a 12-month commitment.
AI answering services
| Provider | Starting price | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | Free, then $150/mo | 25 calls free; 75 calls on Pro |
| Rosie | $49/mo | 250 minutes, English and Spanish |
| Goodcall | $79/mo | 100 unique customers |
AI tools priced like this are self-serve: you set them up yourself. A custom AI receptionist built by an agency (connected to your scheduling software, CRM and on-call rules) usually adds a one-time setup cost, and the monthly cost depends on call minutes and the voice and AI services used. Our AI answering service guide covers what you get for that.
What you’d pay at 100, 200 and 500 minutes
This table uses the cheapest published combination for each volume (a plan plus overage where that’s cheaper than the next tier up).
| Provider | 100 min/mo | 200 min/mo | 500 min/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAP Communications | $179 | about $277 | $649 |
| PATLive | $189 | $349 | $759 |
| Posh | $215 | $420 | $975 |
| Abby Connect | $329 | $599 | $1,380 |
| Ruby | $395 | $720 | $1,725 |
The cheapest and most expensive plans differ by about 2.6 times for the same 200 minutes.
Why the gap? The lower-priced services focus on answering and message taking. The higher-priced ones sell a front-desk experience: dedicated small teams, warm transfers, appointment booking and more customization. If you want that level, our virtual receptionist guide explains what you get for the extra money.
How to estimate your own monthly cost
You don’t need a calculator, just your phone records.
- Count calls. Export two to four weeks of call logs and work out calls per month.
- Estimate the share the service will take. All calls, overflow only, or after hours only? After-hours-only coverage often cuts volume by half or more.
- Multiply by average call length. Message-taking calls are often short; intake and booking calls are longer. If you don’t know, time ten calls.
- Add a buffer. Add 15 to 20% for busy months.
- Price it both ways. Check a per-minute plan and a per-call plan with the same numbers.
Example: 150 calls a month, the service answers half (75 calls), average 2.5 minutes. That’s about 190 minutes, or 225 with a buffer. On the published plans above, that lands between roughly $310 (MAP, 125-minute plan plus overage) and $720 plus overage (Ruby’s 200-minute plan). On Smith.ai’s per-call plans, 75 calls would be the 90-call plan at $810.
Hidden costs to ask about
Headline prices rarely match the first invoice. Ask every provider:
- Rounding. Is each call rounded up to the next minute, or to 30 or 60 seconds?
- What counts as billable time? Hold time, transfers, outbound callbacks and message delivery may all be counted.
- Setup and onboarding fees. Some charge them, several (Ruby, Smith.ai) say they don’t.
- Holiday, night and weekend surcharges. Many providers include 24/7, but confirm.
- Language add-ons. Spanish is included at many services but costs extra at others.
- Spam and wrong-number calls. Will you be billed for robocalls?
- Contracts and cancellation. Month to month, or a minimum term?
For businesses that mainly need night and weekend coverage, our after-hours answering service guide covers how to set the rules so you only pay for calls that matter.
Cheap and affordable answering service options
If budget is the main concern, these are the realistic ways to keep cost down:
- Pay-as-you-go live plans. MAP and PATLive both start at $49 a month with no included minutes, which works if you get a handful of calls.
- After-hours or overflow only. Have your own team answer during the day and send only unanswered calls to the service.
- AI for routine calls. AI plans from $49 to $150 a month cover far more calls than the same money buys from a live service. Keep a human path for emergencies.
- Shorter scripts. On per-minute plans, every question your script adds costs money on every call. Cut to what you actually use.
The cheapest option is not always the one you keep. A service that gets your customers’ details wrong costs more in lost jobs than you saved.
Free trial and free answering service options
There is no free live answering service. People answering phones cost money. But there are good ways to try before you pay, as of November 2026:
| Option | What’s free |
|---|---|
| PATLive | 14-day free trial, no contract |
| Posh | 7 days or 250 minutes, no credit card |
| Abby Connect | Free trial on every plan |
| MAP Communications | Free start, no credit card |
| Smith.ai | 30-day money-back guarantee (live); free AI tier, 25 calls a month |
| Rosie | 7-day free trial |
| Goodcall | Free demo agent; pay when you connect a number |
For a free automated answering service, phone systems such as Google Voice include voicemail transcription and spam blocking. That’s helpful, but callers still reach voicemail, and many won’t leave a message.
When you run a free trial, test it hard: call as a new customer, an angry customer and an emergency, and check what reaches you and how fast.
Virtual receptionist cost vs answering service cost
People often use the terms interchangeably, but on price they’re different tiers. Based on the 200-minute plans above, basic answering lands around $1.38 to $1.75 per minute (MAP, PATLive), while front-desk-style virtual receptionists land around $2.10 to $3.60 per minute (Posh, Abby, Ruby). If your callers mostly need a message taken, paying receptionist rates is wasted money.
Bottom line
For most small businesses, a live answering service costs a few hundred dollars a month, and the difference between providers comes down to how much the agent does on each call. Work out your minutes, price the per-minute and per-call options, and ask about rounding and surcharges before signing.
If your call volume is high and most calls are routine, an AI receptionist can cost less per call than any of the plans above. We set those up for service businesses, with human handoff for the calls that need it, and can price it against your current call log.
