Zapier Alternatives: Zapier vs Make vs n8n, and More

The best Zapier alternatives compared: Zapier vs Make vs n8n on pricing model, self-hosting, AI features and ease, plus Power Automate, Activepieces and others.

The short answer
  • Zapier is the easiest and has the most integrations (8,000+), but it charges per action step, so long workflows get expensive.
  • Make is the cheapest place to start a paid plan ($9/month billed annually for 10,000 credits, November 2026) and has the best visual builder for branching logic.
  • n8n counts a whole workflow run as one execution and can be self-hosted for free, which makes it the cost and control winner for multi-step and AI-heavy workflows.
  • Microsoft 365 shops should look at Power Automate first; teams that want open source with simpler pricing can look at Activepieces.

The best Zapier alternatives for most small businesses are Make and n8n. Make is cheaper to start and has a strong visual builder; n8n counts a whole workflow run as one execution and can be self-hosted, which makes it far cheaper for long or AI-heavy workflows. If you live in Microsoft 365, Power Automate is the other serious option.

Zapier itself is still the easiest tool to learn and has the most integrations. Below we compare Zapier vs Make vs n8n side by side, run the same job through all three price lists, and cover the other Zapier competitors worth knowing.

What the same workflow costs on each

Pricing units are hard to compare in the abstract, so here’s one job run through all three.

Example: a lead workflow with a trigger and 5 actions (add to CRM, email the lead, text the owner, add a row to a sheet, post to Slack). It runs 1,500 times a month.

  • Zapier: 5 tasks per run × 1,500 = 7,500 tasks. That needs the Professional 10,000-task tier: $129/month billed annually ($193.50 monthly).
  • Make: about 6 credits per run (the trigger module counts too) × 1,500 = 9,000 credits. That fits the Core plan’s 10,000 credits: $9/month billed annually ($10.59 monthly).
  • n8n Cloud: 1 execution per run × 1,500 = 1,500 executions. Starter covers 2,500: €20/month billed annually (€24 monthly).

Monthly cost example for 1,500 runs with five actions each: Zapier Professional $129, n8n Starter €20, Make Core $9, all billed annually Illustrative example using November 2026 list prices. n8n bills in euros.

The gap grows with the number of steps. A 12-step workflow would multiply Zapier’s and Make’s counts, while n8n’s stays at one per run. For the full price lists, see our breakdowns of Zapier pricing and n8n pricing.

Price isn’t everything, though. If your team will spend ten extra hours learning n8n to save $100 a month, that’s a bad trade in year one. If you’re running dozens of workflows, it’s an easy one.

Zapier: easiest, biggest, priciest per step

What it’s good at: connecting almost any app with almost no learning curve. Zapier’s MCP page cites 8,000 apps, which means the obscure scheduling tool or niche CRM you use is probably there. Zapier also bundles Tables (simple databases), Forms, Agents and Chatbots.

Where it hurts: cost at volume and complex logic. Each successful action is a task, and multi-branch Zaps get awkward to manage. It’s cloud-only, and Zapier states it doesn’t support HIPAA-regulated health data.

Pick Zapier if: you need a handful of straightforward automations, nobody technical is around, and the apps you use are niche. Our guide on how to use Zapier covers the setup.

Make: visual, flexible, cheap to start

What it’s good at: Make (formerly Integromat) shows your automation as a map of connected modules, with routers for branches, iterators for lists and strong data-mapping functions. Its paid plans start low, and its 3,500+ integrations cover most mainstream business apps.

Where it hurts: credits are consumed by most module runs, including scheduled triggers that check for data, so a scenario polling every minute burns credits even when nothing happens. Error handling and the data-mapping functions take some learning.

Pick Make if: you want visual control over branching logic without hosting anything, and you’re cost-sensitive. More in our Make.com guide.

n8n: most control, best for AI and volume

What it’s good at: a whole run is one execution, there’s a free self-hosted edition, you can write JavaScript or Python in a Code node, and its AI Agent node supports chat models, memory and tools natively. You can keep data on your own servers.

Where it hurts: fewer native integrations (you’ll use the HTTP Request node more often), a steeper learning curve, prices in euros, and self-hosting means you own updates and backups.

Pick n8n if: your workflows are long, run often, use AI agents, or must stay in your own environment.

n8n vs Make: the closest matchup

These two compete most directly, because both handle complex logic well.

n8n Make
Pricing unit Per workflow run Per module run
Long workflows Cheaper Costs grow per step
Short, simple workflows Similar Often cheaper at the low end
Self-hosting Yes No
Code Full JavaScript and Python Built-in functions only
Learning curve Steeper Gentler visual builder

Rule of thumb: if a typical run touches 3 or 4 modules, Make’s $9 Core plan is hard to beat. Past 8 or 10 steps per run, or with AI agents in the loop, n8n usually wins.

Other Zapier competitors and n8n alternatives

Decision flow for choosing between Zapier, Make and n8n based on self-hosting needs, team skills and workflow complexity

Microsoft Power Automate

If your business already runs on Microsoft 365, Power Automate may be the cheapest option because some cloud flows with standard connectors are included with many Microsoft 365 licenses. Premium connectors and desktop automation (RPA) need a paid license; Microsoft lists Power Automate Premium at $15 per user per month, paid yearly, as of November 2026. It’s strong for Outlook, SharePoint, Teams and Excel workflows and weaker for non-Microsoft apps. See our explainer on what Power Automate is and what it costs.

Power Apps vs Power Automate, a common confusion: Power Apps builds simple business apps (forms, screens); Power Automate runs the workflows behind them. They’re often used together.

Activepieces

Activepieces is an open-source automation tool with a clean, Zapier-like builder. Its pricing page lists a free plan with 1,000 credits a month, Plus at $20/month for 10,000 credits and Team at $200/month for 50,000 credits (November 2026). A run costs one credit regardless of steps, and AI steps cost extra credits. You can self-host the Community Edition free.

Activepieces vs n8n: Activepieces is easier for non-developers; n8n has more depth for code, complex logic and AI agents, plus a larger template library.

Pabbly Connect

A budget-focused Zapier alternative popular with small businesses and solo operators. It covers fewer apps and has a less polished builder, but it’s worth checking if your apps are on its list and price is the main concern.

IFTTT

IFTTT (“If This Then That”) is aimed at personal use and smart-home devices rather than business workflows. Zapier vs IFTTT: pick Zapier for business apps like CRMs and accounting tools, IFTTT for connecting lights, phones and home gadgets.

Workato and other enterprise iPaaS

Workato, Tray.io, Boomi and MuleSoft are enterprise integration platforms with quote-based pricing, governance features and IT-led deployment. They’re more than a small service business needs.

Pipedream

A developer-first platform where code steps are the norm. Good for engineers; not where a non-technical office manager should start.

Node-RED vs n8n

Node-RED is a free, open-source flow tool originally built at IBM, popular for IoT, hardware and home automation. n8n is built around business apps, credentials and AI agents. For CRMs and inboxes, pick n8n.

Free and open source Zapier alternatives

If “free” is the requirement, these are your realistic options as of November 2026:

Option Free allowance Catch
Zapier Free 100 tasks/month No premium apps
Make Free 1,000 credits/month 2 active scenarios, 15-minute minimum interval
Activepieces Free (cloud) 1,000 credits/month Runs wait until the next day when you run out
n8n Community (self-hosted) No cap You run and maintain the server
Activepieces Community (self-hosted) No cap You run and maintain the server

HIPAA-compliant Zapier alternatives

If you handle patient data, this matters more than price. Zapier’s privacy documentation, as summarized by Jotform’s HIPAA guide, says regulated health data isn’t supported and Zapier can’t sign a business associate agreement (BAA).

Common routes for clinics and dental offices:

  • Self-host n8n or Activepieces inside an environment you already run under HIPAA safeguards (for example, a cloud account covered by your provider’s BAA), with access controls and logging.
  • Ask the vendor directly whether they’ll sign a BAA for your plan, and get it in writing before sending any PHI.
  • Keep PHI out of the automation entirely: send “new form submitted, check the portal” alerts instead of the form contents.

None of this is legal advice; your compliance officer or counsel should sign off. For healthcare-specific ideas, see our guide to AI agents in healthcare.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Zapier if you want results today with no technical help and your workflows are short.
  • Choose Make if you want visual branching logic and the lowest entry price.
  • Choose n8n if your workflows are long, use AI agents, run at volume, or must stay on your servers.
  • Choose Power Automate if you’re all-in on Microsoft 365.
  • Choose Activepieces if you want open source with simple per-run pricing and an easy builder.

FAQ

What is the best free Zapier alternative?

For a free hosted plan, Make (1,000 credits a month) and Activepieces (1,000 credits a month) are the most generous options as of November 2026. For free with no usage cap, self-host n8n's Community edition or Activepieces' Community Edition and pay only for a server.

Is there an open source Zapier alternative?

Yes. Activepieces is open source, and n8n publishes its code under the fair-code Sustainable Use License, which is free for internal business use. Node-RED is fully open source but aimed more at devices and IoT than business apps.

Is there a HIPAA-compliant Zapier alternative?

Zapier says it doesn't support protected health information and won't sign a BAA. Healthcare teams usually self-host n8n or Activepieces inside their own HIPAA-compliant environment, or use a vendor that will sign a BAA for their plan.

Is n8n better than Make?

n8n is better for long or AI-heavy workflows, self-hosting and code steps. Make is better for non-developers who want a polished visual builder and the lowest paid entry price.

Does n8n have a desktop app?

Not one you need. n8n runs in a browser, either on n8n Cloud or on a server you host; for a local install on your computer, the docs recommend Docker.
